Goal

Drastically reduce interaction cost and friction without sacrificing the narrative immersion and personality that players love.

Project Deep Dive

The Challenge

Immersion vs. Usability

The current Retainer system relies heavily on an "NPC-as-assistant" model. Every management task is framed as a dialogue-driven conversation using standard NPC text windows. While this builds strong narrative flavor and a sense of ownership for new players, it severely compromises everyday usability for active players.

High Interaction Cost

The linear, modal nature of the dialogue-driven interface forces players into a high-friction loop for every single task.

Deeply Nested Menus

A lack of flat navigation forces users through multiple layers of submenus and slow window transitions, worsened by low-scannability menu labels.

Siloed Data & "Pogo-Sticking"

The system treats data as completely separate entities. Without a global overview or item search, players must perform manual indexing, memorizing exactly which NPC holds which category of items.

Friction That Scales With Cost

FFXIV allows players to purchase up to nine Retainers for a monthly fee. Because the UI restricts access to one assistant at a time, power users spend massive amounts of time waiting out repetitive greeting and dismissal animations. A premium storage feature effectively scales into the game's biggest UX hurdle.

UX Evaluation

As a user's needs shift from simple item hoarding to high-volume data management and market usage, the reliance on dialogue-heavy, linear interaction becomes an obsolete bottleneck.

Solution

The Retainer Dashboard

Instead of forcing players to "pogo-stick" in and out of nested windows, the Retainer Dashboard consolidates the entire system into a single interaction. Interacting with the Summoning Bell now opens a unified interface composed of three functional UI widgets, designed to fit perfectly into FFXIV's existing visual design patterns.

*The design is rebuilt from the ground up in Figma.

Retainer List Widget

A selectable sidebar listing all owned retainers. It displays simplified, highly scannable, real-time information and statuses for each individual assistant.

Navigation Buttons

A centralized, flat button layer to instantly swap between functional panels for the currently selected retainer.

Portfolio content view

Retainer Inventory

An expanded, single-paged layout that lets players seamlessly manage items and gil across both retainer and player bags.

Portfolio content view

Retainer Market

A dedicated view to list items, cancel listings, adjust prices, manage accumulated gil, and view sale history.

Portfolio content view

Retainer Venture

A streamlined interface to instantly assign missions, claim loot rewards, and manage retainer gear progression.

Retainer Personality

Greeting dialogue is moved to a non-interactable text widget (commonly used in the game's boss battles). The Retainer's personality remains central to the experience, but it no longer blocks the player's workflow.

Closing Words

This proposal is not about adding new functionality, but about reorganizing existing features into an intuitive package that respects the player's time. By utilizing established UI widgets and familiar design patterns, the transition feels completely natural for the player.

Overcoming Legacy Constraints

The current interface is a product of legacy design and technical necessity. In the original FFXIV 1.0 release, Retainers served as physical traders in the game world before the Market Board existed. During the game's total rework for A Realm Reborn in 2013, this system was repurposed to prioritize functional stability over UI efficiency so development assets could focus on new content.

While that model worked as a temporary fix, it ignores the massive scale of the modern FFXIV audience. With nearly 35 million registered accounts interacting with this system daily, managing retainers is no longer a secondary feature, it is a cornerstone of the daily player ritual.
